Frequently asked questions
- How does the Tool Library work?
- Neighbors submit tools using this form, which you can borrow for short-term use.
- How much does it cost to join and borrow tools?
- Nothing! The library is free to use. Just find a tool that you want to borrow, e‑mail robert@shawtoollibrary.com, and I will help you coordinate the loan.
- How long can I keep a tool?
- The loan period should be discussed with the tool owner. In general, loans are short-term and tools should be returned promptly. Be a good neighbor.
- I have tools I’d like to share. How do I add them?
- Great! Use this form to submit your tools and any notes. Your contact information is required but isn’t made public — only I have access. If you prefer, you can e‑mail robert@shawtoollibrary.com your tool list and contact info.
- How do I remove a tool I previously listed?
- Just e‑mail robert@shawtoollibrary.com and I will remove your item from the library.
- What if my tool is damaged, broken, or lost?
- ⚠️ The Shaw Tool Library does not insure any loans. We simply connect tool owners with neighbors who want to borrow equipment. There’s always a risk that tools may be damaged or lost. If this happens, the borrower and owner should work together to make it right. We rely on the honor system, and everyone is expected to be a good neighbor.
- Who are you?
- My name is Rob. I live on the 4200 block of Castleman Avenue. My wife and I moved to St. Louis from Washington, D.C., in April 2020. I started the Tool Library that summer after getting tired of buying tools for one-time jobs. My hope is that the Tool Library helps people become more handy, save money, and meet their neighbors. If you like this project, you can help me out.
